In 1898 the United States was energized by Horatio Alger stories of the American Dream and anticipated the arrival of the new century. The first automobile was sold, Teddy Roosevelt and his Roughriders charged up San Juan Hill, and Abraham Singer began his one-man print shop in the rear of his Amsterdam apartment. By 1925, Amsterdam Printing & Litho was producing bridge score pads with an advertiser’s name on each page. This entry into advertising specialties would be the impetus for a century of growth. Abe’s grandchildren, then great-grandchildren, would continue to develop the company into a leader of the industry. Using emerging technology, the product line continually expanded, adding new items like vinyl-covered calendars and ballpoint pens. The advent of computers in all phases of production greatly increased the speed and capacity for processing orders. By 2000, state-of-the-art printing presses, hot stamping machines and high-tech laser engraving equipment allowed Amsterdam Printing to ship hundreds of thousands of orders. Today, Amsterdam Printing employs more than 600 people and manufactures and sells 3,000 different promotional items, business forms and human resource products in the United States, Canada and Europe. The company has grown to become a full-service leader and innovator in business-to-business direct mail and imprinted promotional products.
