The origins of the Institute date back to 1928, when the Irish Association of Advertising Agencies was founded. The Institute replaced it in 1964 and for over 40 years has represented the interests of advertising agencies in the Ireland. The IAPI is comprised of 45 member companies, accounting for over 95% of advertising agency expenditure in the country. A non-profit making company, the Institute has a secretariat of 7 and is governed by a Board of 12 Directors, elected annually. Its activities, co-ordinated by the IAPI Committees are wide-ranging and include negotiations with the media, trades unions and government, as well as lobbying at the European Commission and Parliament. The Institute is a long-serving member of the European Association of Communications Agencies . IAPI Sean McCrave is also Chairman of the National Association Council and is on the main board. The Memorandum & Articles of the Institute are available on request and the high standards required of members can be seen in its Bye-Laws. Membership is corporate in nature and is limited to full service advertising agencies, media agencies, creative agencies and digital advertising agencies. Details of membership requirements for prospective member companies are available from the Institutes offices. The IAPI is heavily involved in the industry media research. Representatives are heavily involved in management committees of the Joint National Readership Survey , the Joint National Listenership Research and Joint National Internet Research , the Joint National Outdoor Research surveys and is a partner with in the Nielsen television measurement service. It holds a collective membership of the and on behalf of its membership. The Institute has also commissioned primary research including the Agency Salary Survey, Business Readership Survey, Changing Attitudes, Youthscape and Agency Remuneration. The Institute also produces , the official advertising expenditure measurement service for Ireland. In partnership with the AAI and, the Institute co-operated with the Department of Health and Children in introducing a voluntary code for placement and volume of alcohol advertising in main media. Central Copy Clearance Ireland was set up in February 2003 to ensure that all advertising for alcohol comply with the ASAI codes. The Institute has developed a close working relationship with the AAI. We lobby and present jointly with and to Government, and other relevant bodies. The Institute launched the Advertising Effectiveness Awards in 1996, a competition to find the most effective advertising campaigns in Ireland, repeated in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004. Books of the winning papers have been published and the competition is held ever second year. IAPI also organises the Shark Awards, Ireland’s international broadcast advertising festival encompassing TV, radio, cinema and viral advertising as well as television promos. It organises a major advertising conference annually, the Advertising Works Forum was the 2005 event. In October 1997 it hosted the European Advertising Conference on behalf of the European Association of Advertising Agencies, a considerable accolade. Close liaison is maintained with the Public Relations Consultants Association including the joint publication of standard contracts and industry guidelines. As a founder member of the Advertising Standards Authority in Ireland, the Institute is represented on both its Board and its Complaints Committee. Through the Joint Advertising Education Committee, it supervises the post-graduate masters advertising course at Aungier Street. It also runs a Continual Professional Development programme for its members.
