Founded in January 1998 and funded by International Business Lists, a Chicago based database management company, ChooseYourMail began as an investigation into Internet marketing methods and ethics. ChooseYourMail represents an industry wide effort to improve the Internet in three fundamental ways: Reduce Spam, Promote privacy sensitive, ethical, request marketing. Shift costs from the Netizen and ISP to the advertisers. No single strategy will stop spam. A real solution requires email filter technology, legislation, and adverting industry self regulation. ChooseYourMail promotes the concept of Request Marketing as the appropriate form of email marketing. Request Marketing means that the consumer only receive ad email when they specifically request it. This is the true meaning of opt-in. We reached this conclusion based on interviews with Netizens, ISPs, and various privacy and anti-spam public interest groups. In addition, the cost of unrequested email ads fall upon the ISP to deliver this mail. Ultimately, these costs are passed on to their subscribers. ChooseYourMail charges advertisers a deliver fee which is shared with the ISP. This enables the ISP to defray rising mailserver costs and help keep monthly access fees low for their subscribers. Our research also revealed that Internet users dislike marketers collecting and selling personal information about them. As a result, ChooseYourMail does not collect any personal demographic data. Netizens told us that they believe many web operators resell their email address (quite often they do!) ChooseYourMail will never provide a subscribers email address to anyone. ChooseYourMail, a privately funded initiative, obviously seeks to create a business. ChooseYourMail generates revenue by acting as an ethical infomediary between responsible advertisers and interested Netizens. Now ChooseYourMail has transformed into an International presence for mission critical Internet applications, including Email and Broadband Services.
