Site Stats was started in the UK in 1997. Originally we added a single pixel image to a web page and measured who was requesting the image via web logs. Then we added some JavaScript to learn more about the web visitor. Now, 10 years later, things are more advanced, but essentially the same as they were 10 years ago. But the reports got prettier.
